True Love Confirmed - Part 2

Aug 23, 2026    Matt White

What does it mean to truly know that God loves you? Not as a general statement about the world, but personally, intimately, directed at you as an individual believer? In 1 John 4:16-18, we are drawn into one of the most profound explorations of divine love found anywhere in Scripture. The passage builds on a simple yet staggering declaration: God is love. Everything that is real and true about love finds its source, its definition, and its power in God Himself. As we explore this text together, we discover that the believer's ongoing, deepening conviction that God loves them is not merely a warm feeling but a Spirit-wrought confirmation of salvation itself. John uses two powerful verbs, to know and to believe, both in the perfect tense, to show us that this conviction is not a one-time event but a settled, growing, ever-deepening reality in the life of every true believer. The one who abides in God's love, who keeps returning to it, maturing in it, and resting upon it, gives evidence that God truly dwells in them. This is the kind of love Paul prays about in Ephesians 3, a love so vast in its breadth, length, height, and depth that it surpasses natural understanding. And yet, by the Spirit of God, we are given eyes to see it and hearts to receive it. If you have ever wondered whether your faith is real, or whether God truly loves you in a personal and lasting way, this message speaks directly to that question with both theological clarity and pastoral warmth.
