How to Live in the Last Days - Part 3

Jun 29, 2025    Matt White

In this final section of Jude's letter, we examine two more proper responses believers must have to false teachers and their doctrines while contending for the truth: reaching out to those who are affected by false teaching and rejoicing in every circumstance because of the goodness of God. In verses 22-23, Jude presents us with three groups of people within the church who are affected by false doctrine: the unsure, the seduced, and the ensnared. For each, we're called to show mercy, always remembering the mercy we've received in Christ, but with increasing urgency and directness. This gradual approach reminds us of Jesus' own methods of addressing doubt and falsehood as seen in the Gospels. The imagery of "snatching them from the fire" vividly illustrates the urgency of our mission. Yet, we're also warned to approach this task with fear, "hating even the garment stained by the flesh." This powerful metaphor emphasizes the importance of guarding our own hearts from the contaminating nature of false teaching as we reach out to others. As we navigate these challenges, verse 25 reminds us to rejoice in the promise of God to keep us from stumbling, the plan of God to make us like Christ, and the person of God which grows our confidence in and faithfulness to Him. This balance of vigilance and joy is crucial for our spiritual growth and effective ministry in a world of dangerous and deadly doctrines.
